🇮🇹 Amalfi Coast
Last updated: 2026-03-27
Our Take
Best for: Couples and small groups who want dramatic coastal scenery, limoncello, and Italian village life at a premium price point
The Amalfi Coast is one of those rare places that actually looks like the photos — pastel villages clinging to impossibly steep cliffs, lemon groves cascading to the sea, and water so blue it looks filtered. But it comes at a cost, literally and logistically. Positano is the Instagram darling but staying there means steep staircases for everything (not great for mobility issues) and restaurant prices 40-60% above Naples. The smart play: base in Amalfi town or Minori (better food, lower prices, central ferry access) and day-trip to Positano and Ravello. The Path of the Gods hike (Sentiero degli Dei) from Agerola to Nocelle is one of Europe's great coastal walks — free, 3 hours, jaw-dropping views. Food-wise, this is Campania: the pizza in any random town here is better than the best pizza in most countries. Fresh seafood pasta (spaghetti ai frutti di mare, €14-18 at a local trattoria) and fried calamari (€8-10) are reliably excellent.
When to Go
Late April–May or September–mid October. May has wildflowers in bloom, comfortable 22-25°C temperatures, and ferries running without peak-season chaos. September still has warm swimming water (24°C) with significantly fewer day-trippers. Avoid July–August: the single coastal road (SS163) becomes a gridlocked parking lot, beaches are sardine-packed, and hotel prices double.
Watch Out
The SITA bus along SS163 is scenic but nauseating — prone to severe motion sickness on the hairpin curves. Take the ferry between towns instead (€8-15 per trip, runs April–October). Restaurants in Positano's beach area routinely charge €18-22 for a basic pasta that costs €10 in Minori or Cetara. 'Free' beach chairs don't exist in Positano — expect €15-25/person for a sunbed at a stabilimento. The only free beach is Fornillo, a 10-minute walk from the main beach.
“Italy's most dramatic coastline — base in Amalfi or Minori, hike the Path of the Gods, and save Positano for a half-day visit.”
