🇮🇹 Milan
Last updated: 2026-03-27
Our Take
Best for: Design-minded couples and solo travelers who want fashion, aperitivo culture, and a Lake Como day trip
Milan gets unfairly dismissed as 'just a business city' — it's actually Italy's most cosmopolitan destination with substance behind the style. The Duomo is jaw-dropping (climb to the rooftop terraces, €14, for one of Italy's best views), and The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie is worth every euro of the mandatory €15 timed entry — book 2-3 months ahead or it's sold out. The Navigli canal district transforms at golden hour: aperitivo (€8-12 for a drink plus an all-you-can-eat buffet spread) is a legitimate dinner substitute. The Quadrilatero della Moda (fashion district) is window-shopping at its finest even if you're not buying. Milan is also the gateway city: Lake Como is 1hr by train (€6-13), and Bergamo's stunning Città Alta is 50 minutes away.
When to Go
April–May or September–October. April brings Milan Design Week (Salone del Mobile) which electrifies the city but spikes hotel prices 3x — book early or avoid that specific week. September has mild weather, Fashion Week energy, and the Navigli at their best. Winter (November–February) is foggy and damp but hotel prices drop 40-50% and there are zero queues.
Watch Out
The Last Supper tickets sell out months in advance — if a street tout offers 'last minute tickets,' they're either fake or 5x the face value. Buy only from the official Cenacolo Vinciano website. Fake petition scammers near the Duomo approach asking you to sign for a 'charity' then demand a donation — firmly say no and keep walking. Milan's coperto (cover charge) runs €2-3 at restaurants and is non-negotiable; what's not okay is the occasional tourist-area restaurant adding a hidden 15% servizio on top.
“Italy's most underrated city — skip the 'just a layover' cliché and give it three proper days.”
