🇸🇬 Singapore

Our Take
Best for: Premium travelers and first-time Asia visitors who want a safe, seamless entry point — and anyone willing to trade budget for a city that actually delivers on every promise it makes
Singapore is expensive by Southeast Asia standards and worth it by Singapore standards — which is to say the city delivers with unusual consistency. The Marina Bay skyline at night, Gardens by the Bay, the colonial Civic District — none of it disappoints. But the smartest decision you'll make is eating every meal at a hawker centre: Maxwell Food Centre for chicken rice, Tekka Centre in Little India for roti prata and fish head curry (more authentic than Maxwell, half the tourists). A kopi and kaya toast breakfast at a kopitiam costs SGD $3–4 and is as Singaporean as the skyline. Tiong Bahru is the neighborhood worth an afternoon — pre-war flats, an indie bookshop worth browsing, and cafés that feel like they belong to actual residents. Skip Universal Studios Sentosa (overpriced, dated) and Orchard Road (same prices as Knightsbridge, minus the charm).
When to Go
February to April or June to August. Singapore sits near the equator so the variation is less dramatic than elsewhere, but these windows avoid the northeast monsoon that drenches November and December. February hits the sweet spot: post-monsoon, pre-peak-season pricing, and Lunar New Year festivities transform Chinatown into something genuinely spectacular.
Watch Out
Singapore's laws are real: drugs carry mandatory death, jaywalking earns an on-the-spot fine, and importing chewing gum is prohibited (possessing it for personal use is fine). Seafood restaurants are the most common tourist pricing trap — 'market price' chili crab can arrive as a $250+ bill at Boat Quay touts. Agree on a price before you order, or eat at a hawker centre where everything is posted. There is a digital scam epidemic targeting foreigners; don't respond to unsolicited WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers, and never share banking credentials.
“The most polished city in Asia — worth the premium if you spend like a local at hawker centres and save the hotel money for one good dinner at a rooftop.”
