🇬🇧 London

Our Take
Best for: History buffs, theatre lovers, and families who want world-class museums (free), global cuisine, and a city that never runs out of things to do
London is enormous, expensive, and absolutely worth it. The British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, V&A, Natural History Museum, and Science Museum are all free — that alone makes it one of the best family destinations in Europe. The food scene has genuinely transformed: Borough Market is touristy but the quality is real, Dishoom's bacon naan roll is legendary, and Brick Lane's curry houses (skip the touts, go to Tayyabs) prove London is a global food capital. West End theatre is world-class and day-of tickets at TKTS Leicester Square run £20-40 for shows that cost £80+ online. The Tube is efficient but expensive (£2.80/ride on Oyster, caps at £8.10/day in Zones 1-2). Stay in Shoreditch, Bermondsey, or Peckham for better value and more interesting neighborhoods than the West End tourist zone.
When to Go
May–June or September. June has the longest days (16+ hours of light), the parks are in full bloom, and outdoor events kick off. September has warm weather without school-holiday crowds. Avoid December–January unless you love grey skies and 4pm sunsets — though the Christmas markets and Boxing Day sales are draws for some.
Watch Out
The 'charity mugger' (chugger) scam: clipboard-holding people on Oxford Street and Southbank who claim to collect for charity but are paid commission sellers signing you up for direct debits. Politely decline and keep walking. Currency: the UK uses GBP (£), not euros. Dynamic currency conversion at card terminals ('pay in your home currency?') always gives you a worse rate — always choose to pay in GBP. 'Free' walking tours in Westminster demand a £10-20 'donation' at the end — they're not free, just variable-price.
“The world's deepest city — you could visit 20 times and never repeat a day. Just budget accordingly.”
