🇪🇸 Barcelona

Our Take
Best for: Couples and solo travelers who want architecture, food, beaches, and nightlife in one city
Barcelona is the rare city that genuinely delivers on everything: Gaudí's Sagrada Familia is as mind-bending in person as the photos suggest, the Gothic Quarter tapas bars are legitimate (skip the tourist traps on La Rambla), Barceloneta Beach is a real city beach that's actually good, and the nightlife doesn't start until midnight because dinner doesn't end until 11. The Boqueria market is touristy but the quality is real — grab a fresh juice and move on. For food, skip the waterfront and eat in Gràcia or El Born. Barcelona is mid-range rather than budget, but a menu del día (3 courses + drink) at a neighborhood restaurant runs €10-14.
When to Go
May or September–October. May has ideal weather (21°C highs), manageable crowds, and summer pricing hasn't kicked in yet. September is warm enough for the beach with 40% fewer tourists than July. La Mercè festival (late September) is a free citywide celebration worth timing around. Avoid August: peak heat, peak crowds, and half the local restaurants close for vacation.
Watch Out
Pickpocketing on La Rambla, the metro, and near Sagrada Familia is aggressive and sophisticated — use front pockets, avoid phone-in-back-pocket. Sagrada Familia tickets sell out weeks ahead; book online immediately. Tourist tax: €3.25/person/night (municipal + regional). Airbnb is heavily restricted — book licensed accommodation only.
“The most complete European city — architecture, food, beach, and nightlife all in one walkable package.”
