🇯🇵 Osaka

Our Take
Best for: Foodies, solo travelers, and anyone who wants Tokyo energy at 70% of the price
Osaka is the most livable major city in Japan for a short trip. Dotonbori is touristy but genuinely fun at night — the neon, the Glico sign, the takoyaki carts on the bridge all deliver. Kuromon Ichiba is the real local food market (compare it to Nishiki in Kyoto and it is not close). Shinsekai is underrated — deep-fried kushikatsu at standing bars, Showa-era architecture, and cheap beer. Osaka Castle is worth the entrance fee but skip the interior museum unless you are deep into Japanese history. Budget around 3,000-5,000 yen ($20-35) for a serious food crawl through Namba and you will eat better than most sit-down restaurant meals elsewhere in Japan.
When to Go
March to early April for cherry blossoms at Osaka Castle park (less tourist pressure than Kyoto). October to November for autumn foliage and comfortable temperatures around 15-20°C. Late November through February is cheapest and least crowded — cold (5-10°C) but Osaka's covered shopping arcades (Shinsaibashi, Tenjinbashisuji) make it workable. Hard avoid: Golden Week (late April to early May), when the entire country is traveling and prices surge across the board.
Watch Out
Dotonbori pickpocketing is real — Osaka is far safer than most global cities but the dense nighttime crowds in Namba are the main exception, so keep your wallet in a front pocket. The standing bars in Shinsekai and Namba have a strict no-double-dipping rule for kushikatsu — one dip per piece in the shared sauce; re-dipping is a local faux pas that will earn you a stern look. Getting from KIX to the city by taxi costs around 20,000 yen; take the Haruka express train (~2,400 yen) or the cheaper airport bus (~1,600 yen) instead.
