🇺🇸 Miami & South Beach
Last updated: 2026-03-27
Our Take
Best for: Couples and solo travelers who want beach, nightlife, Latin culture, and Art Deco architecture without a passport
Miami is two cities stitched together. South Beach is the glossy, overpriced postcard — Ocean Drive Art Deco, bottle-service clubs, models rollerblading past $22 cocktails. It's fun for 48 hours but the prices are Manhattan-level and the food is mediocre. The real Miami is across the bridge: Little Havana's Calle Ocho for $4 ventanita Cuban coffee and a media noche sandwich, Wynwood for street art and craft breweries, Coral Gables for old-money Spanish Mediterranean architecture, and Design District for free gallery-hopping. The food scene's strength is Latin fusion — Peruvian-Japanese nikkei, Venezuelan arepas, Colombian bandeja paisa — all at prices 30-40% cheaper than South Beach. Key Biscayne and Crandon Park are the beaches locals actually use.
When to Go
November–April. December through March is peak season — dry, 24-27°C, low humidity, perfect beach weather. Hotel prices peak around Art Basel (early December) and spring break (March). May is the best shoulder month: summer heat hasn't peaked, prices drop 30%, and hurricane season hasn't started in earnest. Avoid August–October: peak hurricane season, brutal humidity (feels-like 40°C+), and daily afternoon thunderstorms.
Watch Out
South Beach restaurant scams: menus without prices, automatic 20%+ 'service charges' on top of expected tips, and tourist-trap mojitos for $25. Always check the bill. Parking in South Beach is expensive and confusing — use the city parking garages ($2/hr) not valet ($30+). Uber surge pricing after midnight in Brickell/Wynwood is brutal on weekends. Sunburn is no joke — UV index regularly hits 11+ even in winter.
“Skip the South Beach tourist trap and eat your way through Little Havana, Wynwood, and Coral Gables — Miami's real personality is Latin, loud, and delicious.”
