🇲🇽 Cancún & Riviera Maya

Our Take
Best for: Families, couples, and first-time Mexico visitors who want Caribbean beach quality without Tulum price tags
Cancún delivers unambiguously on beach quality — the Hotel Zone's stretch of Caribbean is legitimately one of the best-looking coastlines in the Americas. The all-inclusive model, love it or hate it, genuinely works here: you can budget your entire trip to $150–200/day per couple all-in. The downside is insularity. The Hotel Zone is a Vegas-style strip of chain hotels and tourist-trap restaurants where the exchange rate will be bad, the tips are baked in, and nobody will speak Spanish back to you. For the actual Mexico experience — tacos for $1, street markets, local mezcal bars — take a cab 20 minutes to downtown Cancún or head 45 minutes south to Playa del Carmen. Isla Mujeres is the day trip that almost everyone agrees is worth it.
When to Go
December through April. Dry season with consistent sunshine, low humidity, and the best visibility for snorkeling and cenote swimming. January–March is peak season and rates reflect it. May is the sweet spot — shoulder-season pricing, uncrowded beaches, and sargassum seaweed hasn't built up yet. Avoid June–October: hurricane season (the Yucatán has taken direct hits), peak sargassum months, and oppressive humidity. November is a solid shoulder option if you catch a gap between storms.
Watch Out
The Hotel Zone is safe but expensive — restaurant overcharges, menu 'service fees' in USD at a brutal exchange rate, and forced-tip scams are common. Timeshare solicitations are relentless from the airport to the pool deck; the pitch starts with 'free breakfast.' ATM skimming in the Hotel Zone has spiked — use indoor bank ATMs only. Never get in an unlicensed taxi at the airport; use authorized transportation desks or pre-book transfers. Sargassum seaweed is a real problem June–September and can make the beachfront smell. Water quality outside the resort pools varies — drink bottled water only.
“The best value beach vacation in the Caribbean if you play it right: go all-inclusive for lodging, leave the Hotel Zone for food, and book at least one day trip to the cenotes or Isla Mujeres.”
