🇦🇪 Dubai

Our Take
Best for: Luxury-seeking couples and families who want guaranteed sun, zero language barrier, and over-the-top experiences
Dubai is a theme park disguised as a city — and that's not an insult. The Burj Khalifa observation deck at sunset is genuinely breathtaking, the Dubai Mall aquarium is world-class, and the desert safari dune-bashing is the best adrenaline rush in the Gulf. Old Dubai is the part most visitors miss: Deira's Gold Souk and Spice Souk across Dubai Creek are atmospheric and walkable, and an abra (water taxi) costs 1 AED ($0.27). Al Fahidi Historical District has galleries and courtyard cafes that feel nothing like the Marina. During Ramadan (dates shift yearly — check before booking), restaurants are closed during daylight hours, alcohol service is restricted, and the city operates on a different rhythm. It's still visitable but requires planning. Brunch culture is Dubai's real religion: Friday brunches at hotels run AED 300–600 ($80–165) for unlimited food and drinks.
When to Go
November–March. December and January are perfect — 24–26°C, clear skies, zero rain. February and March are slightly warmer and less crowded. Avoid May–September entirely: 40–48°C heat makes outdoor activities genuinely dangerous, and everything moves indoors. October and April are shoulder months — hot but tolerable if you plan around pools and malls.
Watch Out
Dubai is not as expensive as its reputation if you avoid the tourist traps — but the traps are everywhere. The 'free' dhow cruise offered by hotel concierges costs 3x what booking direct does. Taxis from DXB airport use meters but drivers sometimes 'forget' — insist on the meter or use the RTA app. Alcohol is only served in licensed hotel bars and restaurants; buying from a liquor store requires a license (tourists can get temporary ones). Friday brunch is the best value for splurging — weeknight hotel dinners are the worst. Dubai Mall parking on weekends is a 45-minute ordeal; take the metro.
“The world's most polished tourist machine — not authentic, not cheap, but undeniably impressive and effortlessly easy.”
