🇨🇷 Arenal & Manuel Antonio

Our Take
Best for: Couples, families, and nature lovers who want adventure and wildlife without roughing it
Costa Rica invented the eco-tourism playbook and this two-stop itinerary is the greatest hits. Arenal Volcano delivers hot springs (Tabacón is the splurge; Baldi is the value pick), hanging bridges through cloud forest, and world-class zip-lining. Manuel Antonio National Park packs monkeys, sloths, toucans, and a white-sand beach into the smallest national park in the country — arrive at 7am before the tour groups. The drive between them (3-4 hours) passes through stunning mountain scenery. Costa Rica is more expensive than its Central American neighbors — a casado (rice, beans, plantain, salad, meat) at a local soda runs 4,000-6,000 CRC ($7-10 USD), and national park entry is $18/person for foreigners. But the infrastructure is solid, English is widely spoken, and the wildlife sightings are almost guaranteed.
When to Go
December–April (dry season). February–March is the sweet spot: reliably dry, warm (28-32°C at lower elevations), and green season hasn't started. The transition months of November and May offer lower prices with acceptable weather — brief afternoon showers, lush greenery, and fewer crowds. Avoid September–October: the rainiest months, when some roads become impassable and Pacific beaches get rough swells. Arenal is cloudier and wetter than Manuel Antonio year-round; pack layers.
Watch Out
The 'tourist price' is baked into everything — tours booked through your hotel cost 30-50% more than booking direct with the operator. Crocodile Bridge on the road to Manuel Antonio is a popular stop, but the guardrail is low and crocs are wild — stay back. Rental car break-ins at trailhead parking lots are common; leave nothing visible. Manuel Antonio has aggressive capuchin monkeys that will steal food from your hands and backpacks. The colones-to-dollar conversion is straightforward (~530 CRC/$1) but some tourist businesses round aggressively in their favor.
“The safest, most accessible nature trip in Latin America — hot springs, zip lines, sloths, and beaches in one easy loop that works for everyone from honeymooners to families with kids.”
