Our Take
Best for: Adrenaline-chasing couples and adventure travelers who want nature at its most dramatic
Victoria Falls is the widest curtain of falling water on Earth — 1,708 meters across and 108 meters down, producing a spray plume visible from 50 km away. The Zimbabwe side (Victoria Falls town) gives you the best frontal views of the falls from the rainforest walk, where you'll get absolutely drenched from the spray during high water. The Zambia side (Livingstone) lets you walk right to the edge at the Knife Edge Bridge and offers the Devil's Pool experience (swimming at the lip of the falls, September–December only). Most travelers stay on the Zimbabwe side for convenience and views, but crossing the border is easy with a KAZA UniVisa ($50, covers both countries). The town itself is small and tourist-focused but not tacky. The Zambezi River above the falls offers sunset cruises with hippos; below, it serves up some of the world's best commercial white-water rafting (Grade 5 rapids).
When to Go
February–May for peak water flow — the falls are at their most thunderous and the spray creates permanent rainbows. Visibility can be reduced in March–April when spray is heaviest. August–December for the best photography and Devil's Pool access — water levels drop, revealing the rock face and allowing safe swimming at the edge. June–July is the sweet spot: strong flow, clear views, pleasant 25°C days. Avoid late October–November if you want dramatic falls — water can be low and the Zambia side nearly dry.
Watch Out
The Zimbabwe side entrance fee is $50 USD (cash or card) — steep for a national park, but there's nothing else like it. Street vendors and 'guides' outside the park entrance are persistent; a firm 'no thank you' works. Bring a waterproof phone case or dry bag for the rainforest walk — you will get soaked from head to toe during high water months. The bungee jump off Victoria Falls Bridge ($160) is safe and iconic but book directly through Shearwater or Wild Horizons, not through hotel tour desks that mark up 30%. Malaria is present — prophylaxis recommended. The Zimbabwe dollar situation is chaotic; USD is widely accepted and preferred.
“Book the helicopter flight — seeing Mosi-oa-Tunya from the air is the most spectacular 15 minutes of any Africa trip.”
