🇹🇿 Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Our Take
Best for: Once-in-a-lifetime safari seekers and wildlife photographers willing to pay for the real thing
The Serengeti is not a zoo — it's 14,750 square kilometers where you will see things that make nature documentaries look tame. The Great Migration is the headline: 1.5 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras moving in a clockwise loop through the ecosystem. July–October they're in the northern Serengeti for the Mara River crossings (the most dramatic wildlife event on Earth). January–February they're in the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area for calving season — 8,000 babies born per day, and predators know it. Ngorongoro Crater is a separate wonder: a 260-sq-km collapsed volcano with the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa and near-guaranteed Big Five sightings in a single day. Budget safari isn't really a thing here — park fees alone are $70/person/day for Serengeti — but mid-range options (camping safaris, group trips) bring costs down from astronomical to merely expensive.
When to Go
July–October for the Great Migration river crossings in northern Serengeti — dry season means animals concentrate around water, making game viewing spectacular. January–February for calving season in the southern plains near Ngorongoro — fewer tourists, incredible predator-prey action. June and November are excellent shoulder months. March–May is the long rains: muddy roads, some camps close, but green season rates drop 30–40%.
Watch Out
Tanzania park fees add up fast: $70/person/day for Serengeti, $70 for Ngorongoro Crater (single entry), plus vehicle fees and concession fees. A 5-day safari for two can easily hit $3,000–6,000 even at mid-range. Book with a licensed Tanzanian operator — the 'budget safari' touts in Arusha often use poorly maintained vehicles and untrained guides. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. The drive from Arusha to Serengeti is 8+ hours on rough roads; internal flights (Arusha to Seronera, ~$250 one-way) save a full day each way and are worth every dollar.
“The most expensive destination on this site and the one most likely to be the best trip of your life.”
