Our Take

Best for: Couples and experience-focused solo travelers willing to pay for natural beauty they won't find anywhere else

Tulum has completed its transformation from budget backpacker haven to premium destination — and the math is brutal. Average hotel rates hit $450/night in 2025, taxis charge $15–40 for short rides (no Uber, no meters), and beach club minimum spends routinely run $50–100 before you order anything. Mexico's consumer watchdog Profeco has suspended businesses for unjustified price gouging. That said, the cenotes are real, the Mayan ruins perched above the Caribbean are genuinely stunning, and the jungle-to-beach landscape remains unlike anywhere else in Mexico. Come knowing what it is now, not what it was in 2015.

When to Go

December through March. Dry season with minimal sargassum seaweed — the region's worst months are June–August, with 2025 setting an all-time record for sargassum volume at 38 million metric tons in the Caribbean. January and February offer the clearest cenote water and manageable crowds before the spring break surge. Avoid hurricane season (June–November) not just for weather but because power outages and road construction are most disruptive during the wet season.

Watch Out

Infrastructure has not kept pace with the hotel boom: power outages are routine, water shortages occur, and many properties still run generator backup. Taxis have no meters and Uber doesn't operate in the hotel/beach zone — negotiate the fare before getting in or you will be overcharged. Car rental companies are notorious for charging tourists for pre-existing damage; photograph every panel before driving off. Sargassum seaweed can make beach days genuinely unpleasant April–September. Cenotes worth visiting (Gran Cenote, Dos Ojos) sell out in high season — book in advance. Tulum Town has affordable food but getting between the pueblo and the beach zone without your own transport is a constant friction.

The cenotes and ruins justify one visit. The prices justify one visit only. If your budget is under $200/day, Cancún delivers more beach value for less money — come to Tulum specifically for the cenote experience and the clifftop ruins.
