🇳🇱 Amsterdam

Our Take
Best for: Solo travelers and couples who want world-class museums, canal-side drinks, and Europe's most bike-friendly city
Amsterdam is compact, beautiful, and deceptively layered. The Rijksmuseum (€22.50) and Van Gogh Museum (€20) are both legitimately world-class — book timed slots online or you won't get in. The Anne Frank House (€16) is one of the most moving museum experiences in Europe; tickets release 6 weeks ahead and sell out within minutes — set an alarm. Beyond the big three, the real Amsterdam is in the Jordaan (canal-side cafes, vintage shops, the Foodhallen), De Pijp (Albert Cuyp Market, Indonesian rijsttafel, Heineken Experience), and Amsterdam-Noord across the free ferry (former shipyard turned creative hub with NDSM Wharf and A'DAM Lookout). Cycling is the way to move — rent a bike (€12-15/day) and you'll cover more ground than any tourist on foot. A broodje haring (raw herring sandwich, €4-5) from a haringhandel is an essential Amsterdam experience.
When to Go
Late April–May or September. Late April has King's Day (April 27, the entire city becomes an orange-clad street party) and tulip season at Keukenhof. May brings canal-side terrace season and 16+ hours of daylight. September has warm weather and the cultural season reopening. Avoid July–August: crowded and expensive, and Dutch summer weather is unpredictable (rain any day).
Watch Out
Bike theft is epidemic — always use two locks and never leave a rental unlocked for even 30 seconds. The Red Light District has organized pickpocket teams working the narrow alleys, especially late at night. Tourist-menu 'pancake houses' near Dam Square charge €15-18 for €6 pancakes — eat at The Pancake Bakery in the Jordaan instead. Taking photos of sex workers in the Red Light District windows is illegal and can get your phone confiscated.
“Europe's most livable city to visit — rent a bike, eat herring, and book your museums six weeks out.”
