🇬🇷 Athens

Our Take
Best for: History buffs and budget foodies who want ancient ruins, rooftop Acropolis views, and €2 souvlaki
Athens is criminally underrated as a European city break. Most people treat it as a layover before the islands — that's a mistake. The Acropolis is legitimately awe-inspiring (go at 8am opening to beat the heat and crowds), but the real Athens is in the neighborhoods below: Psyrri's street art and wine bars, Exarchia's anarchist-chic tavernas, and Koukaki's rooftop apartments with lit-up Parthenon views for €80/night. The food scene is one of Europe's best bargains — a loaded souvlaki pita at Kostas in Syntagma runs €3, and a full mezze spread with ouzo for two in Monastiraki costs €25-30. Athens is gritty in places (Omonia Square at night, parts of Metaxourgeio), but that rawness is part of the appeal if you're coming from sanitized European capitals.
When to Go
April–May or October. May averages 24°C with minimal rain and the Acropolis isn't a furnace yet. October is warm enough for outdoor dining with summer crowds gone. Avoid July–August: 35-40°C temperatures make the exposed archaeological sites genuinely punishing, and the city empties as locals flee to the islands.
Watch Out
The 'friendship bracelet' scam near the Acropolis and Monastiraki: someone ties a bracelet on your wrist, then demands €10-20. Pull your hand away immediately. Restaurant touts on the Plaka pedestrian streets aggressively recruit diners — the food behind those menus is universally mediocre. Walk two blocks to Psyrri or Koukaki instead. Taxi drivers from the airport sometimes 'forget' the meter — insist on it or use the BEAT app (Greek Uber equivalent). The flat rate to city center is €40 (€55 at night).
“Europe's most underpriced capital — ancient history, world-class street food, and Acropolis sunsets for less than you'd spend on lunch in London.”
