Our Take
Best for: Budget solo travelers and couples who want Gothic architecture with $2 beer
Prague is the cheat code for European city breaks. The Old Town looks like a film set — Gothic spires, baroque facades, cobblestone lanes — and you can experience it all while spending less per day than a mediocre dinner in Paris. A half-liter of excellent Czech draft beer at a neighborhood pub runs 40-55 CZK ($2). Charles Bridge at sunrise (go before 7am) is genuinely magical. Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle complex in the world. The catch? The tourist center is packed June–August, but step two blocks off the Royal Way and you're in a real city with real prices.
When to Go
Early September or late April–May. September gives you summer warmth without summer crowds — 40-60% fewer tourists than July. May is lush and pleasant. Avoid December unless you specifically want Christmas markets (beautiful but sardine-packed). January–February is frigid but nearly empty.
Watch Out
Currency trap: Czech Republic uses CZK, not euros. Exchange offices near Old Town Square have predatory rates — use ATMs or Revolut. Wenceslas Square area has the highest concentration of tourist-trap restaurants; eat where locals eat in Vinohrady or Žižkov. Prague Airport struggles in winter fog — December delays can hit 50+ minutes.
“The most beautiful cheap city in Europe — a genuine Gothic fairy tale at prices that make you wonder what you're missing.”
