Machu Picchu is one of those rare bucket-list destinations that actually delivers. The first glimpse of the citadel emerging from cloud-wrapped peaks is a genuine travel moment. But Cusco is more than a Machu Picchu staging area — the Plaza de Armas is gorgeous, Qorikancha (the Inca sun temple beneath a Spanish church) is mind-bending, and San Pedro Market serves 3-course menú del día lunches for S/10 ($2.70). The Sacred Valley (Ollantaytambo, Moray, Maras salt mines) is worth 2-3 days on its own. Rainbow Mountain is a punishing but rewarding day hike at 5,200m. Budget travelers can do Cusco + Machu Picchu for $60-80/day including the train; mid-range runs higher because train tickets and Machu Picchu entry aren't cheap.
When to Go
April–May or September–October. These shoulder months offer dry weather without peak-season pricing and crowds. June–August is peak dry season — clear skies but 40-60% higher prices and Machu Picchu tickets sell out months ahead. February: the Inca Trail closes for maintenance. Rainy season (November–March) means green landscapes and fewer tourists but muddy trails.
Watch Out
Altitude sickness is real at 3,400m — spend 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before any treks. Coca tea helps. Machu Picchu allows only 4,044 visitors/day and tickets must be booked in advance. The train to Aguas Calientes costs $140-240 roundtrip (PeruRail or Inca Rail) — there's no road access. Book Inca Trail permits 3-6 months ahead. Internal flights from Lima occasionally cancel due to Cusco's short runway.
