🇯🇴 Petra & Wadi Rum

Our Take

Best for: History nerds, adventure couples, and anyone who's ever wanted to walk through an Indiana Jones set

Petra is one of those rare places that exceeds the hype. Walking through the Siq — a narrow, 1.2-km slot canyon — and seeing the Treasury emerge in full sunlight is a top-5 travel moment on Earth. But Petra is much bigger than the Treasury: the Monastery (Ad Deir) requires 800 steps up and is equally stunning with a fraction of the crowds. The entire site takes 2 full days to explore properly — the 2-day pass (JOD 55 / ~$78) is dramatically better value than the 1-day (JOD 50 / ~$70). Wadi Rum is 90 minutes south and feels like Mars with better hospitality: Bedouin camps serve mansaf (lamb with fermented yogurt over rice) under more stars than you've ever seen. Amman is worth a night for its food scene — Rainbow Street's falafel and kunafa are world-class.

When to Go

March–May and September–November. Spring has wildflowers and comfortable 20–25°C temperatures. October and November are ideal — warm days, cool nights, thin crowds after summer. Avoid June–August: 35°C+ in Petra with no shade on most trails makes the Monastery climb punishing. December–February can be surprisingly cold (5–10°C at night in Wadi Rum) and occasionally rainy, but the light is magical for photography.

Watch Out

The 1-day Petra pass is a tourist trap — you'll rush through and miss 80% of the site. Always buy the 2-day pass. Horse handlers at the Siq entrance will offer a 'free' ride that's included in your ticket, then demand a large tip at the end — decline politely or agree on a price upfront. Petra is a massive site with very little shade and no food vendors beyond the entrance — bring 3+ liters of water and snacks. The Jordan Pass (JOD 70–80) bundles your visa fee + Petra entry + 40 other sites and saves money if you're visiting for 3+ days.

Buy the 2-day pass, climb to the Monastery at dawn, sleep in Wadi Rum — this is the Middle East trip that converts skeptics into repeat visitors.
