🇦🇷 Buenos Aires
Last updated: 2026-03-13
Our Take
Best for: Solo travelers and couples who want European grandeur with South American soul at budget prices
Buenos Aires feels like Paris and Rome had a baby and raised it on steak and Malbec. The grand avenues (Avenida de Mayo, 9 de Julio) are genuinely European in scale. Recoleta Cemetery — where Evita is buried — is more beautiful than most museums. San Telmo's Sunday antique market is world-class. And the food: a full parrilla (Argentine BBQ) dinner with wine runs $15-25 at a neighborhood spot. The tango scene is real — not just shows for tourists, but milongas (social dance halls) where locals dance until 4am. The blue dollar exchange rate situation has normalized in 2026, but Buenos Aires remains very affordable for visitors.
When to Go
March–May (autumn) or October–November (spring). March-April gives you warm days (23-26°C), golden foliage, and shoulder-season pricing. November is jacaranda bloom season — the purple-canopied streets are Instagram-famous for good reason. Avoid January–February: extreme heat (30°C+) and many porteños leave the city. Argentine winter (June–August) is cool but culturally rich — the Tango Festival happens in August.
Watch Out
ATC strikes can disrupt flights at both airports — build in buffer days for connections. Ezeiza airport is 45 min from the city; domestic flights use Aeroparque (closer). Petty theft is common in tourist areas — use ride-hailing apps at night, avoid showing phones on the street in La Boca. Restaurants don't open for dinner before 8:30pm; most locals eat at 10pm. The blue dollar rate gap has mostly closed in 2026 — card payments are fine now.
“South America's most sophisticated city — tango, steak, Malbec, and architecture at prices that feel like a generous exchange rate error.”
