🇪🇬 Cairo & Giza
Last updated: 2026-03-13
Our Take
Best for: History buffs and adventurous budget travelers who thrive in controlled chaos
The Pyramids of Giza live up to the hype — the sheer scale is something photos cannot convey. The Grand Egyptian Museum (opened 2024) is the most impressive museum opening in a generation, housing Tutankhamun's complete collection. Cairo itself is overwhelming: 22 million people, traffic that defies physics, call-to-prayer echoing across the skyline. But that chaos is part of the experience. Koshari (Egypt's national dish — lentils, rice, pasta, tomato sauce) costs 50-60 EGP ($1) at Abou Tarek. A felucca sail on the Nile at sunset costs $5. Khan el-Khalili bazaar at night is electric. The Saqqara step pyramid complex is less crowded than Giza and equally stunning.
When to Go
October–November. Ideal temps (24-30°C highs), manageable crowds, and 20-30% below peak pricing. March–April is pleasant but watch for Khamsin sandstorms. Avoid June–August: 35°C+ heat with occasional 40°C+ spikes makes outdoor sightseeing brutal. December–February is peak tourist season — pleasant weather but highest prices.
Watch Out
Cairo traffic is genuinely insane — use Uber (it works well here) or hire a private driver for a full day. Pyramid area touts are extremely aggressive; book a guide in advance to avoid the hassle. Tap water is not safe to drink. Visa on arrival costs $25. The Egyptian pound has depreciated significantly — great for visitors, but verify prices as inflation adjusts.
“The most historically significant budget destination on Earth — nothing else comes close to seeing the Pyramids for the first time.”
